Touched by his wife’s cancer journey, Wicklow artist Patrick Walshe has produced a collection of 15 paintings detailing the experience of bearing witness to the effects of cancer treatment. The collection, entitled Nocturnes- A cheomtherapy vigil was inspired with the feelings of hope, despair, catharsis and renewal that come with the cancer journey. In a wonderful act of generosity, Walshe has donated the entire collection to the Marie Keating Foundation with the proceeds of their sale going to support the Foundation’s Survive and Thrive programme.

This December, the Origin Gallery is kindly exhibiting the full Nocturnes collection, with a launch evening taking place on Thursday, 8 December from 6pm-8pm. Please join us to meet Patrick Walshe, view these extraordinary paintings and hear about the hopeful story that inspired their creation.

Some of the paintings can be seen on this page.

How the Nocturnes collection is helping the fight against cancer

Nocturn-14-500x500Cancers are increasingly detected at an earlier stage, and as treatments continue to improve, more and more people are surviving cancer. There are now over 128,000 cancer survivors in Ireland – which is wonderful news. However, this can also present a whole new set of challenges – and a person can go from being surrounded by a medical team and the entire focus of their friends and family, to being suddenly told that they are now cancer free, do not require ongoing medical treatment and can now ‘get back to normal life.’ Many people struggle to make this adjustment and may find that it is only then that their ‘battle’ is over that emotions can hit them. To help cancer survivors  adjust to the ‘new normal,’ the Marie Keating Foundation has launched its Survive & Thrive programme, a 6-week expert-led programme to help survivors make the transition to life after cancer through advice on topics such as stress & fatigue management, nutrition, exercise and coping with emotions.   The first Survive & Thrive course took place in February 2015 and was vastly oversubscribed. By the end of 2015, over 450 men and women had attended further courses around the country. More Survive and Thrive courses have taken place in 2016 and we look forward to helping more cancer survivors embrace their return to good health next year.

By purchasing one or all of the paintings, you will be supporting our Survive & Thrive Programme for cancer survivors. Each course has space for 20 survivors who have been affected by any type of cancer and are open to both men and women.

You will also be supporting the Wicklow Hospice as 5% of the proceeds will be donated to this worthy charity.
